Surfing rules to follow

If you want to enjoy good sessions without putting yourself or others in danger—or getting dirty looks from other surfers—you need to follow specific rules. Indeed, far too many surfers are unfamiliar with the rules of right-of-way, for instance.

We’ve put together a quick summary of what you need to know and observe if you want to be respected in return.

1) First of all, the basic rule is one surfer per wave. There is no point in dropping in if a surfer is already committed to the wave, unless you want to be accused of “snaking” or “burning” them.

2) Next, the surfer closest to the peak (the area where the wave breaks first) has priority. They retain this priority throughout the entire duration of the wave’s break.

3) If the waves of two surfers converge and break at the same spot, they must ensure they do not make contact. They must therefore exit their respective waves, even if they have priority.

4) To paddle back out, you must go around the peak rather than passing through the area where the wave is breaking, so as not to get in the way of other surfers and to avoid any accidents.

5) When waiting for waves, it is best to wait behind the line-up (where the wave breaks) rather than in front of it; otherwise, you get in the way.

6) You should surf at your skill level and use equipment suited to your style and physique. This isn’t strictly a rule, but rather a piece of advice that will help you master your gear and avoid disturbing others.

7) Communicate with others. It is essential to let others know which way you intend to go. Likewise, a quick “hello” when arriving at the peak is always appreciated.

8) Always hold onto your board. If it hits someone in the head, it can be very dangerous.

9) Be courteous: don’t hog the waves—share them. It makes the session and the atmosphere more friendly; that’s the spirit of surfing, isn’t it?

10) Finally, if you ever make a mistake, you must apologize—that applies everywhere!
