For surfers with a little more experience, the most complete site remains Windguru, which allows you to analyze the conditions in more detail.

You can also view live surf cams on several sites like Go Surf or the official site of the city of Anglet. They allow you to check conditions in real time before traveling to the beach.

The most favorable winds for surfing in Anglet are southeasterly and easterly. These offshore winds—blowing from the land toward the ocean—result in cleaner, smoother, and better-shaped waves. However, the absolute best conditions occur on days with little to no wind.

For most surf spots in Anglet, the ideal swell size is generally between 1 and 1.5 meters, with a period of 9 to 11 seconds. Thanks to its long beaches facing the Atlantic, Anglet picks up swell very well and offers consistent waves almost year-round. When the swell gets larger and the period longer, certain spots can become very powerful and hollow, with strong currents. Consequently, days with heavy swell are best suited for experienced surfers; intermediate surfers should head to spots like VVF or La Barre instead.

The best time of day to surf is often early morning or late afternoon, when the winds are lighter. It is also important to consider the tides, which change daily and significantly influence wave quality depending on the specific spot.

You can surf in Anglet all year round. Summer generally offers smaller, more accessible waves—ideal for beginners—while autumn and winter bring more consistent swells for intermediate and advanced surfers.

The best time to surf is often between September and November. Swells become more consistent, winds are frequently offshore, the water remains relatively warm, and the lineups are less crowded than in the height of summer.

Yes, some spots in Anglet remain surfable when the swell picks up—particularly the VVF spot to the south, or La Barre at low tide. If the swell exceeds two meters, it is better to head for the rocky breaks near Guéthary or even Hendaye.

At high tide, there are fewer spots that work well in Anglet. The beaches there are more or less alike, separated by breakwaters. Surfing at high tide depends entirely on the sandbanks, and in Anglet, these shift with the seasons. Consequently, the spots that work at high tide change frequently; it is hard to predict which beach will be best, so it is better to be there in person to check conditions or look at the webcams.

In Anglet, especially in the height of summer, it is hard to find uncrowded spots. However, there are a few spots that are less busy than others, such as La Barre and Les Corsaires. Ultimately, though, the timing and conditions will make more of a difference than the specific spot itself; you are bound to find fewer people early in the morning or when conditions are average (e.g., with onshore wind).

When the ocean picks up and conditions become truly heavy, surfing can sometimes be difficult. A “backup spot” is one that is less exposed to the swell than others, thereby offering smaller, more accessible conditions during periods of heavy swell. In Anglet, the best backup spot is La Barre, as it is sheltered by the jetty.

Currents
The Atlantic Ocean is known for the power of its waves and strong currents. There are several types of currents depending on the beach layout. The most well-known is the “baïne” (rip channel); this current forms alongside sandbars on wide-open beaches, such as those in the Landes region.

Rocky seabed
It is important to know the nature of the seabed at the spot you intend to surf so you don’t put yourself in danger during a wipeout, a duck dive, etc. There are some excellent spots that break over a rocky bottom (known as “reef breaks”) south of Guéthary, such as Cenitz or Lafitenia; these spots are generally reserved for intermediate-to-advanced or experienced surfers.

Crowded waters
With the growing popularity of surfing and the Basque Coast in recent years, surf spots are becoming increasingly crowded. It is therefore crucial to respect right-of-way rules to avoid endangering yourself or risking injury to other surfers around you.

Shorebreak
A shorebreak is a wave that breaks directly onto the sand or rocks; it is a very dangerous phenomenon that often occurs at high tide or at specific locations. Unfortunately, serious accidents happen every year along the Basque Coast and in the Landes region.

If you have any doubts about these hazards, the best course of action is to ask the lifeguards or local surfers for information.

Water temperatures in Anglet generally range from 12°C in winter to 22°C in summer. We recommend wearing a wetsuit when surfing, at least between November and May.
