Currents

It is important to know the nature of the seabed at the spot you intend to surf so you don’t put yourself in danger during a wipeout, a duck dive, etc. There are some excellent spots south of Guéthary—such as Cenitz or Lafitenia—where waves break over a rocky bottom (known as “reef breaks”); these spots are generally reserved for intermediate-to-advanced or experienced surfers.

With the growing popularity of surfing and the Basque Coast in recent years, surf spots are becoming increasingly crowded. It is therefore crucial to respect right-of-way rules to avoid endangering yourself or risking injury to other surfers around you.

Shorebreak
A shorebreak is a wave that breaks directly onto the sand or rocks; this is a very dangerous phenomenon that often occurs at high tide or at specific locations. Unfortunately, serious accidents occur every year along the Basque Coast and in the Landes region.

In Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the main fallback spot is Socoa Bay, sheltered by the harbor breakwater. It is far less exposed to swell than open-coast spots, offering smaller, mellower, and more accessible conditions when other locations become too powerful or chaotic. It is often the most reliable option when the ocean is too rough.

In Saint-Jean-de-Luz, options are quite limited at high tide because many spots are sensitive to the rising tide. For cleaner, more structured waves, you should head to the reef breaks at Parlementia and—especially—Cénitz near Guéthary; these work particularly well at mid-to-high tide with clean swell.

The least crowded spots in St. Jean are mainly located outside the central areas. Erromardie and the coves near Acotz generally offer more tranquility than Lafitenia or Sainte-Barbe, especially on weekdays or when conditions are average. These are more spread-out areas—sometimes requiring a bit of a walk—but they allow you to get away from the most famous peaks.
